Summary

The Asia Pacific region is witnessing a keenness among countries to develop offshore wind capacity. Taiwan recently announced plans to install a total of 5GW worth of offshore wind capacity. Japan is also looking to replace its nuclear capacity and is planning to install 6GW of offshore wind capacity. Offshore wind energy companies like MHI Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, and Orsted have signed numerous Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to install wind projects in the region, which is emerging as the world’s next offshore wind energy hub. However the region is prone to typhoons, which are severe tropical cyclones. More specifically, a typhoon is the strongest of all tropical cyclones.

The Northwest Pacific is the most active tropical cyclone basin around the world, which contributes to about a third of the tropical cyclone activity. Japan and Taiwan have a higher chance of being affected by intense tropical cyclones than anywhere else in the world. Taiwan witnesses an average of 3 to 4 typhoon hits each year, while Japan encounters 2 to 3 (Japan is also susceptible to near-misses from an average of 8 to 10 typhoon passes each year). This poses a challenge for the wind turbine manufacturers to come up with typhoon-ready turbine technology.
