Summary
Saudi Arabia's inbound tourism declined slightly in 2015 and this is largely attributed to the decrease in Hajj pilgrims as the country reduced the quota due to the expansion of mosque Masjid-e-Haram. Hajj pilgrims from outside Saudi Arabia declined marginally by -0.3%. However, as 2015 was the last year for the cut in pilgrim quotas as construction is now complete, international arrivals are expected to increase significantly over the coming years. According to Saudi Hajj Ministry, the number of Hajj pilgrims (including domestic and international) are expected to increase from 1.9 million in 2015 to five million in 2016 and then to 20 million by 2020.
Key Findings
- To reduce its economic dependence on oil, Saudi Arabia aims to focus on other industries such as tourism. It plans to issue visas to tourists to showcase its rich heritage.
- Prince Sultan bin Salman announced on April 26, 2016 said: “the country will not be totally open for everybody to just show up and come in. It is open for people that are doing business, for people working in Saudi Arabia, investing in Saudi Arabia, and people who are visiting for special purposes. And now it will be open for tourism again on a selected basis”. No specific date has been set for the implementation of this proposal to issue visas to leisure and business tourists
- Abraj Kudai hotel, the largest in the world with 10,000 rooms, is being constructed in Mecca and is expected to be completed in 2017.
