In Sweden, the hearing impaired population receives some form of public reimbursement for hearing aids. Sweden comprises seven regions, which all have slight variations in their reimbursement policies. Depending on the region, patients’ subsidies may range from €300 to €600 for the devices, and may be reimbursed extra for the fitting of hearing aids. However, patients seeking to purchase hearing aids from private retail stores may not be reimbursed, or only receive a small subsidy. One of the distinguishing features of the Swedish hearing aid market is that the reimbursement price is only applied to the unit itself; the after-service cost portion is excluded.
The total hearing aid market includes both manufacturer revenue and retail revenue. The manufacturer hearing aid market segment represents the revenue generated from manufacturers selling their hearing aids to retailers. The retail hearing aid market segment represents the revenue generated from retailers selling hearing aids to end users. This approach was taken in order to do a comparison of the market revenue of the manufacturers of the hearing aid devices versus the retail hearing aid sales.
