The Spanish reimbursement system is highly fragmented. As of 2015, adult hearing impaired patients in Spain received variable levels of support based on what autonomous community they lived in. Contrary to this, children under the age of 16 receive up to €740 for acquiring a hearing aid. If older than 16, a patient may be eligible for a €300 to €1,000 subsidy. However, since there is no uniform hearing aid policy, most clinics do not require a prescription from an ENT doctor and the specific requirement for the subsidy can vary greatly between regions. Therefore reimbursement is noticeably lower in Spain when compared to other European countries.
The total hearing aid market includes both manufacturer revenue and retail revenue. The manufacturer hearing aid market segment represents the revenue generated from manufacturers selling their hearing aids to retailers. The retail hearing aid market segment represents the revenue generated from retailers selling hearing aids to end users. This approach was taken in order to do a comparison of the market revenue of the manufacturers of the hearing aid devices versus the retail hearing aid sales.
