In the Netherlands, patients had historically benefited from one of the most lucrative reimbursement policies in all of Europe. However, in 2013, there was a dramatic reduction in reimbursement that significantly reduced sales. However, by the end of 2015, unit sales had recovered to pre-reimbursement levels. The Dutch market has been experiencing immense pressure on downward prices. In addition to the increasing burden being placed on the health system, pressure is mounting on manufacturers of hearing aids to reduce their prices via calls for tenders. Insurance companies have been trying to cut reimbursement rates across the board, and some manufacturers have been operating at a loss the past couple of years.
The total hearing aid market includes both manufacturer revenue and retail revenue. The manufacturer hearing aid market segment represents the revenue generated from manufacturers selling their hearing aids to retailers. The retail hearing aid market segment represents the revenue generated from retailers selling hearing aids to end users. This approach was taken in order to do a comparison of the market revenue of the manufacturers of the hearing aid devices versus the retail hearing aid sales.
