The total EEG market can be categorized into five main market segments: routine (also referred to as clinical), long-term, intensive care units (ICU), research markets and processed EEG (also known as depth of anesthesia monitoring).
A clinical EEG recording takes 20 to 40 minutes on average and can be performed on-site at a hospital or in private clinics. During this time, activation procedures are performed that result in differed brain activity that is compared to the brain’s activity during a resting awake state. These procedures include sleep, intermittent photic stimulation, hyperventilation and eye closure.
Epileptic seizures are also monitored over a period of several days to weeks by clinical EEG devices. Long-term EEG monitoring occurs when an admitted patient is connected to a device to localize seizure activity in epileptic patients, determining a patient’s eligibility for surgery and examining the mental health of the patient (psychiatric disorders).
ICU monitoring is another form of long-term EEG monitoring where ICU patients are monitored for 24 to 72 hours to detect non-convulsive seizures and status epilepticus conditions. The only treatment for status epilepticus is a drug induced coma. ICU monitoring not only monitors for seizure activity but it is also used for monitoring sedation levels, information that is important to patient safety. Non-convulsive seizures can go undiagnosed and if so, lead to severe deterioration of the patient and even death.
The research EEG market is divided into two distinct segments: low and high count electrode montages. An average low count EEG device has between eight to 32 channels and is used primarily by psychologists and researchers/engineers looking to utilize signals from the brain to interact with prosthetic devices. High count EEGs can monitor up to 256 channels. High channel count EEG devices are primarily used for research by neurologists and software algorithm development. The research market is expanding into the functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) market also. This technology falls beyond the scope of the report; however, it is an emerging technology with much promise in the research field and potentially the clinical setting.
