Neurosurgical microscopes have many requirements such as extreme precision, outstanding color conformity, high resolution image quality, efficient light transmission, exceptional detail within the field of view and ergonomic use, all of which increase surgical accuracy and decrease physician fatigue. Leica has produced a 3D heads-up system which saves surgeons from having to look through the oculars of the microscope for long portions of the day.

The neurological microscope market is expected to grow slowly over the forecast period. This market does not include refurbished devices. Only devices sold to replace an existing system and devices sold as brand new systems are included.
There may be an uprise in the market if new technology is marketed or if clinics decide it is a good time economically to invest; however, there is significant uncertainty due to the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.
There should be stable growth in neurosurgical microscope unit sales with the vast majority of units sold replacing existing systems since it is a mature market. Most systems are sold to replace older units that have been in service for nearly all of their expected lifespan. However, some units are purchased for the technological advancements in newer models. New models can also be purchased if a healthcare facility is expanding its neurosurgery department. The replacement cycle for neurosurgical microscopes is typically three to four years, but they may last up to five to six years, and some aren’t replaced for 15 to 20 years.
